VW Golf named safest car

Volkswagen’s Golf VI is the safest car, according to tests carried out by Euro NCAP.

The results were compiled following crash tests of dozens of new and used cars over the past three years, with each model put through its paces around four times.

Component tests were also carried out and an inspector assessed the results and each car’s safety equipment and features.

The VW Golf VI came out on top, followed by the Honda Insight, Toyota Prius and Hyundai i20.

“Even though these cars excel in different areas of safety, their presence in the top-five list indicates that they are among the top safety achievers of the year,” commented Dr Michiel van Ratingen, secretary-general of Euro NCAP.

In order to gain the maximum grade of five stars, vehicles must achieve 80 per cent in adult occupant protection, 75 per cent in child occupant protection and 40 per cent in pedestrian protection.
