Jaguar Land Rover Showcase a remote control Range Rover Sport, controlled by the driver on a smartphone outside the vehicle.
This exciting news comes from researchers developing new sensing technologies that will work in all weathers so future autonomous cars can go anywhere.
The Range Rover Sport research vehicle demonstrates how a driver could drive the vehicle from outside the car via their smartphone. A breakthrough in this technology now means that in the future, drivers could be using smartphones to reverse their car out of a parking space or use the app as a guide for the car in off-road situations.
The clever system uses sensors to assess the space and environment around the car and to inform the driver of when it is safe to perform manoeuvres.
Jaguar Land Rover’s vision is to offer a choice of an engaged or autonomous drive. This means the customer can chose if they would like the car to drive itself, or this can be adjusted for a more engaging and involved drive.
Dr Wolfgand Epple, Director of Research and Technology at jaguar Land Rover highlights just how beneficial this technology would be for a customer,
”Getting a car out a a tricky parking manoeuvre can be a stressful experience for any driver. A remote control car or a vehicle that can autonomously turn in the road, demonstrates how we could use these new technologies to reduce the tedious parts of driving and improve road safety.”
With Jaguar Land Rover’s advanced research programme under-way, perhaps this technology could be just around the corner?
