Honda Yuasa Racing celebrated double podium success at the Thruxton round of the BTCC at the weekend, with Gordon Shedden leading home team-mate Matt Neal in race one.
Shedden took advantage of the slow start of Smith’s VW on pole and soon pulled away from the chasing pack before maintaining the lead for the duration of the contest. Championship leader Neal, despite coming under race-long pressure, was eventually able to secure an impressive second place finish with maximum ballast on board.
The result for the new Civic Type-R continues a run of eight victories for Honda machinery in the last nine races at the Hampshire circuit which has spanned three models of car, impressively.
“I got a fantastic start so straight away I was in some clear air which made the all-important job of looking after the tyres quite a bit easier,” said Shedden. “To get another win and one-two with the new Civic Type-R is a fantastic feeling.”
The three car battle between Neal’s Honda, Smith’s VW and the WIX Racing’s Mercedes ended when Smith’s car suffered from a puncture. The car slid wildly at high-speed before Smith saved it and crawled back to the pits for fresh tyres. Morgan secured another notable podium place, finishing in third place ahead of Jason Plato’s VW.
Congratulations to the entire Honda Yuasa team – we’re proud of you!
