Showcasing some of the most spectacular concept models, from an electric coupe to a concept car equipped with external airbags, the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show had something for any enthusiast interested in looking at what the automotive future has to offer.
A surprise exhibition at the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show was Honda’s Sports EV Concept. Delivering a performance-oriented take on the Urban EV concept, Honda have billed the Sports EV as:
“A concept model which combines EV performance and AI (artificial intelligence) inside a compact body, with the aim to realize the joy of driving the user can feel with a sense of unity with the car.”
Taking styling cues from the classic S600 coupe, whilst adding futuristic halo headlights and taillights, this Sports EV Concept is designed to mix old fashioned styling with new age performance and technology.
First showcased at the Frankfurt Motor Show, Honda confirmed the release date for the retro inspired Urban EV Concept car for 2019, stating:
“This is not some vision of the distant future; a production version of this car will be here in Europe in 2019.”
Based on the original Civic Mk1, the car is shorter than the Jazz supermini and breaks the convention of new small cars with its old school design. The interior of the car has bench style seat and a giant touchscreen display on the dashboard which gives the cabin an open and relaxed feel.
Honda showcased the Honda NeuV mini electric concept at the Tokyo Motor Show, which features an emotion engine developed by CocoroSB, a Japanese artificial intelligence company.
Called HANA (Honda Automated Network Assistant), this engine picks up driver driving styles by detecting the driver’s emotions in terms of judgement and performance and then signal to the driver various choices and recommendations.
The Honda NeuV mini electric concept has the ability to answer the issue of idle vehicles by operating as part of an autonomous ride sharing fleet, allowing owners to generate revenue from their vehicles when not in use.
Lexus has unveiled its LS+ concept at Tokyo Motor Show previewing advanced self-driving technology that is to be incorporated in the brand’s upcoming flagship model.
Lexus say the LS+ Concept features a host of self-driving technology that includes the Highway Teammate system, which knows when to enter and exit a motorway.
Also, the Lexus LS+ concept model’s on-board artificial intelligence system ensures, the car is always learning about its surroundings and by receiving the over-the-air updates it keeps the car system up to date. This way, the owner doesn’t need to take the car to the dealer for software update.
The Auto Body’s Wonder Capsule is Toyota’s answer for a futuristic compact city car. It measures in at only 2,500 mm in length and 1,300 mm in width and features a completely vertical windshield and a large glass area.
The seats and floor come equipped with fluorescent material that glows in dark, and although there is no boot space, behind the seats of this two-seater concept is a small storage compartment.
Initially unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show in January, more news was given on Toyota’s Concept i intelligent battery-electric car, with the idea now being stretched into three different transport forms:
The Concept i combines two Toyota obsessions; advanced artificial intelligence and machine learning, and enhanced urban mobility, both perceived as particularly important for Japan’s ageing population. Concept i’s machine-learning interface is known mysteriously as The Agent, or as it was called last January, Yui.
Toyota showcased the Fine-Comfort Ride concept at the Tokyo Motor show as “a new form of the premium saloon.” Weighing in at more than two tonnes, the Fine-Comfort Ride features a long tubed hydrogen tank capable of holding six kilos of fuel and has a predicted range of more than 600 miles.
The front two rows consist of individual seats that can be rotated to face each other for conversation, or to make it easier for passengers to get in and out. The final two seats are a sofa-like bench that’s tucked in just before the near-vertical rear glass area; this set-up allows the middle row occupants to recline their seats if there’s nobody sitting behind them, creating an aircraft-style ‘sleeper seat’.
The cabin makes extensive use of touch screens, as well as what would appear to be projection technology on the side glass.
