Back to Listers ŠKODA
ŠKODA's Rapid Spaceback is the brand's most competitive try yet at the Focus-sized family hatchback segment. We reckon the latest 1.0-litre TSI petrol variant is the one to choose. Jonathan Crouch looks at what's on offer.
The Octavia name - based on the latin for 'eight' - is an almost inseparable part of ŠKODA's history, dating all the way back to 1959 when it arrived to designate the eighth design produced by the Czech brand following World War II. In modern era guise, Octavias have sold prolifically, enough, if placed end-to-end, to fill all three lanes of the complete M25.
But those sales of course date back to a time when this was a slightly smaller and much less sophisticated car. This third generation Octavia was an altogether more sophisticated thing, a car you can electronically tweak to suit both your mood and the road you're on. A ŠKODA that can automatically park itself, brake itself or dip its own headlights. A ŠKODA in fact that can do everything you'd expect a comparable Audi to do - at a substantial price saving.
There's a cost for that of course: don't expect one of these to be super-cheap on the used market - in the way that family-minded ŠKODAs used to be. But you're getting a lot more for your money with this MK3 model Octavia. If you doubt that, then try one. It might surprise you.
ŠKODA upped the ante with its third-generation Fabia, introducing sharper, more assertive styling and clever tech that has been bringing down the average age of its customers. With more space inside and increased scope for personalisation, the Fabia seems to be getting the basics spot on these days and further benefits from the introduction of an impressive 1.0-litre TSI entry-level powerplant. It's available in either 95 or 110PS guises and even the base variant gets to 62mph in 0.6s en route to 115mph, yet manages 65.7mpg with emissions dropping to just 99g/km. There's also a 90PS 1.4-litre TDI diesel option. As before, there's a five-door Hatch bodystyle, or an Estate with a class-leading 530-litre boot capacity.
Some citycars sell on cute and cuddly virtues. This isn't one of them. Here instead, the urban runabout has grown up, become mature, got itself properly sorted. If that puts off the twentysomethings who'd prefer something more fashionable, then so be it. There are plenty of others in search of an urban runabout with big car virtues and small car pricing, spacious, efficient and beautifully built.
This, according to ŠKODA, is 'engineering excellence with a human touch' - a design someone's clearly thought very carefully about. True, there are feistier citycars you could consider: maybe more charismatic ones too. But none that better deliver on the promise of two words that sum this Citigo up. Simply clever.
ŠKODA has replaced its popular Yeti SUV with this car, the Karoq. Jonathan Crouch looks at what this small but spacious compact Crossover has to offer.
