Toyota's latest generation RAV4 has become quite the polished item and recent spec changes make it look an attractive showroom proposition too. Jonathan Crouch takes a look.
Many serious off-road vehicles are about as comfortable as going over Niagara in a barrel when used on the road, but Toyota's Land Cruiser is one champion mud-plugger that can hold its own on the tarmac. The latest model enhances this reputation with sleeker exterior styling, a more sophisticated, comfortable and higher quality interior, plus improvements to its dynamic performance and user-friendliness, both on and off-road.
Overall, the Land Cruiser still seems happily out of step with its rivals in the large family 4x4 segment. As they get ever more sporting and powerful, this Toyota seems a breed apart, resolutely rugged despite the improved quality of the latest car. It's as if the brand has dialled in a little Lexus into the Land Cruiser mix without diluting the core proposition. Perhaps that's no bad thing.
You can see why pick-up sales continue to rise. They're practical, tax efficient and more car-like than ever before. Too car-like perhaps? If you're worried on that score, then this improved post-2012-era sixth generation Hilux will suit you perfectly. Changes to this smarter, more frugal Euro5-compatible model made it a slightly more practical day-to-day tarmac tool, but never far below the surface is the rugged toughness that has taken this vehicle to the furthest and most inhospitable parts of the Globe.
From Alaska to the Sahara to the Australian Outback, this is the vehicle of choice for people who need to get the job done. Drive one and you can see why.
The facelift applied to this MK3 model Yaris in 2014 certainly gave the car a fresh lease of life. Of course, no matter how far you tweak the trimmings, it's hard to change any car's fundamental DNA and sure enough, under the trendier packaging, this supermini remained the smartly conservative choice it always was.
It's not the car you'll want in this segment if ultimately, your priority lies with a dynamic drive. To be frank though, we can't imagine too many potential used buyers being especially bothered by that. These people prioritise endearing looks over engaging handling and want a trusted brand that'll deliver them low running costs, a comfortable ownership experience and plenty of useful technology. All of which is on offer here. The difference though, with this improved post-2014 MK3 model Yaris is that it was all packaged so much better. Previous to the introduction of this revised model, it was hard to imagine many below retirement age really wanting one of these. In this form, this car's appeal proved to be far broader.
So, how to sum up? Well, there are doubtless more engaging chapters in the Yaris story still to be written, but what's important is that the updates made to this 2014-2017-era car put this third generation version back on track. Which makes it a decent used buy.
Toyota's Prius is best known as the nation's favourite hybrid car. This second generation model is also available in Plug-in guise, as Jonathan Crouch reports.
The changes Toyota has made in refining this fourth generation RAV4 have been welcome. The car now has more equipment, plus infotainment and safety has been brought up to speed. The important news though, lies in the increasing availability of hybrid power across the line-up, still a rare thing in the compact SUV segment. No other brand has more experience with this kind of engine - and that shows with the installation here.
If you have decided that a RAV4 is what you want, don't automatically tick the box for the diesel version before you've got your dealer to allow you to have a go in a hybrid model. This petrol/electric variant does, after all, give you the useful option of AWD and once you've added up all the fuel and CO2 figures, it probably won't cost you any more to run in the real world. Something to think about. In a car worth thinking about.
