Overall, it's true that there are certainly trendier choices you could make in this segment. And cars that offer up a more dynamic drive. But if you're a typical Polo person, we reckon you might quickly tire of their charms. At the end of the day, there's much to be said for an extra touch of quality and class. Seek those as your priorities and you'll find the improved MK5 version of this little supermini more than happy to oblige.

So, is this CC worth its premium over a standard Volkswagen Passat? If you can afford it, then we're guessing you'll think so. If you can't, then you'll probably agree with the journalist who, when the very first version of this car was originally launched, commented that never in the field of automotive manufacturing had so much been changed to so little effect for the benefit of so few. It's a valid point of view, but it's not ours. The idea of a practically-sized four-door coupe might sound like a contradiction in terms, but it was interpreted here in a really classy form.
True, the changes that distinguished this improved model from the original 2008-era Passat CC weren't especially great, but they were enough to give this CC a much more distinct, much more up-market identity than it had had before. As a used buy, one of these is, in our view anyway, far more desirable than an entry-level BMW 3 Series or Audi A4 from this era that would cost about the same. Style, it seems, is not about the badge on your bootlid. But if you're a potential CC buyer, then you probably already knew that anyway..
This, the best looking drop-top Golf ever made, attracted people who would probably never have bought the brand's metal folding roofed Eos model, even though it was no cheaper when specified like-for-like. The reasons why are many. For a start, this car offers affordable lower-powered engines at the foot of its range, so when it was new, lead-in prices looked more attractive. But it's more than that.
This Golf is perkier than its Eos counterpart ever was, both to look at and to drive, comparing well on both counts to the best of its rivals. It also feels more substantially built than anything else in the class from this era, rides beautifully and is impressively refined. Yes, there are drawbacks - it certainly isn't cheap and the handling isn't geared to suit enthusiasts - but both of these issues apply equally to most obvious rivals. Ultimately, it's a classy contender and can be credited as being one of the models that turned the tide of public preference away from metal folding roofs and back to smart classy fabric tops in cars of this kind. A landmark then, just as Golf Cabriolets have always been.
