The all new Volkswagen Golf has claimed World Car of the Year 2013.

Fending off competition from 42 entries from all sectors of the market across the globe, including the new Mercedes-Benz A-Class, the Porsche Boxster / Cayman and the Toyota GT 86.

Volkswagen is no stranger to the competitions, having won four of the last five, and having taken the 2012 title with the up! city car.

This year, 66 respected judges from a variety of automotive professions formed a panel representing 23 countries. The Golf, which has evolved since 1974 to offer an unbeatable all round performance in the family car sector, impressed with its equipment levels and safety equipment and offered a “right sized, but spacious’ body which successfully treads between heritage and progress.

And now the Golf has added another prestious award to its collection: Japan’s ‘Car of the Year 2013/14’.

It’s the first imported to model to take the top prize in the competition’s 34 year history

A panel of 60 judges awarded the latest Golf 504 out of 600 points which is a record for an imported car and beat the second place model by 131 points and was a huge 337 points over the car in third position.

Shigeru Shoji, Volkswagen Group President in Japan said “We are delighted that the Golf is the first imported car to win the main prize. This award is dedicated to everyone who has supported Volkswagen in Japan over the past 60 years”.

This award is only the latest high point in a long list of prestigious awards. First place in Car of the Year 2013 (Europe), World Car of the Year 2013 and the Golden Steering Wheel 2013 are particular highlights achieved by the most successful German car ever.
