Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles electrifies the 2018 IAA

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles introduce five new zero-emission models to their fleet

Dealer List

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles have made big strides in their fleet of vehicles this year through introducing no fewer than five new zero-emission vehicles, creating a new matrix of electric mobility for commercial use. Making their world debuts were the I.D BUZZ CARGO, ABT e-Transporter, ABT e-Caddy, the Cargo e-Bike and the Crafter HyMotion which is equipped with a hydrogen fuel cell drive system.

I.D BUZZ CARGO

The I.D BUZZ CARGO is the first commercial vehicle on the new I.D Family and the modular electric drive kit (MEB). It embodies a new progressive design DNA, an automated driving mode (“I.D Pilot”), extremely good space, a digitalised cargo system and long ranges. The MEB enables ranges from approximately 205 to more than 341 miles (per WLTP) – depending on the battery size and the specific model.

Crafter HyMotion

The Crafter HyMotion leads Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles into a new direction with its hydrogen fuel cell drivetrain. The new hydrogen powered van has been specially designed for longer journeys, as the more daily distance covered, the more appeal there is for hydrogen fuel cells in large commercial vehicles. The tanks integrated in the Crafter HyMotion have a capacity of 7.5kg hydrogen. This allows the 4.25-tonne van to cover driving ranges of more than 500km. Pair this with a refill time that is comparable to that of conventionally powered models and you have a zero-emissions vehicle that is especially attractive for business use.

ABT e-Transporter

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has offered its Transporter model series for eight decades. Now the brand is connecting the best-selling vehicle’s drive system with electricity. The battery of ABT e-Transporter is constructed to be scalable so that it can satisfy the needs of a wide variety of potential applications and budgets in a possible production model. In its base configuration, the Transporter comes with a lithium-ion battery that has an energy capacity of 37.3 kWh; the second battery version offers an energy capacity of 74.6 kWh. Driving ranges of the two versions are between 208 and 400 km.

ABT e-Caddy

The ABT e-Caddy is a redesigned version of the traditional Volkswagen Caddy Van which went before it. The new van features an 82-kW electric motor which is supplied from a lithium-ion battery, leading the van to a top speed of 120km/h, and will be one of the most spacious electric vehicles in its class with a cargo compartment volume of 4.2m³.

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles is also presenting the ABT e-Caddy as a taxi, offering ample space for five people plus luggage. With a range of up to 220km, the zero-emission vehicle has been ideally tailored for urban use in the environmental restriction zones of European cities.

Cargo e-Bike

The Cargo e-Bike is writing history this year for Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles as being the brand’s first electric bike. It is the most advanced of its kind in the world and will be released in 2019.

The new bike from Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles is pedelec (pedal electric cycle) that works by adding assistance to its rider’s pedalling through a 250 Watt (48V) mid-mounted motor at speeds of up to 25km/h. This vehicle is equipped with two wheels at the front, and with a load platform positioned low between them. Mounted on this load platform is a cargo box with storage volume of 0.5m³.
