For the second time, the Volkswagen Amarok has managed to fend off last year’s rivals, the Ford Ranger and Ssangyong Musso, to secure the overall title of ‘Best Pick-up’ in the recent WhatCar? 2020 Car of the Year awards.
This is not only because of its ability to carry over a tonne of payload across a range of different terrains, but because of its ability to provide a great overall driving experience on normal roads as well - both in terms of styling and performance.
Editor of What Car? Steve Huntingford said: “Just because a pick-up truck is expected to lead a hard-working life, that doesn't mean quality in other areas must be compromised, and the Volkswagen Amarok presents the most compelling all-round package in the class. In fact, the Amarok even gives conventional SUVs a run for their money.”
The Engine
Looking first at its impressive V6 diesel engine, which is available across the entire model range with two options: 254bhp or 201bhp, you have choice of great performance or mighty performance. The entire range is four-wheel drive and comes with an eight-speed automatic gearbox, which really gets you on the move if you put your foot down. Speaking of which, when you do put your foot down, WhatCar? mentions that the vehicle is ‘impressively stable when towing, with all models capable of pulling a braked trailer weighing up to 3100kg,' which is a real plus.
The Interior
The interior of the Amarok also achieves the balance between function and performance. First it combines the need for functionality with its sturdy frame and wipe-clean plastics alongside the trademark Volkswagen styling. The seating and steering wheel are both comfortable and adjustable, with good visibility. You will also find a decent amount of space inside, allowing five adults able to fit inside comfortably.
