There are big goals for Audi as it begins the first Formula E World Championship season. In Diriyah, Saudi Arabia, the season starts with two night races and the motivation of the team aims to make their mark in motorsport.
Firstly, the Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler is the most successful team so far, with 43 podium finishes in the series. The Managing Director of Audi Sport GmbH, Julius Seebach says “We go into every season with the clear goal of winning races” whilst the Team Principal, Allan McNish states “the team is full of energy and passion to make this season a successful one”. One thing is clear, the motivation is clearly apparent for the Audi Motorsport Team.
The two races are on Friday and Saturday and do not start until 8pm local time, meaning they will be help in the dark. These two races in Diriyah are a moment of truth for Lucas di Grassi, who is the most successful Formula E driver with 32 podium finishes. Lucas di Grassi states that “we won’t know the true balance of power this year until we leave the paddock on Saturday night. That nervous anticipation always makes a season opener particularly exciting.” This is a brand new team for Audi as newcomer Rene Rast, joins record-holder Lucas di Grassi for what looks to be an incredible season.
The two races are marking the 70th and 71st rounds in Formula E history. However due to the pandemic and the uncertainties that come with it, this year the Formula E race calendar will be announced in stages. Currently, events planned until the end of June are Rome, Valencia, Monaco, Marrakesh and Santiago. As July approaches, a decision will then be made for the rest of the events which are to be held in various locations including Berlin, London and New York.
Along with the Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler team, will be the Envision Virgin Racing customer team racing in the Audi e-tron FE07 for points. Furthermore, competing for the British squad is Nick Cassidy and Robin Frijns, who have been a member of the Formula E family since the beginning race back in 2014.
