The Audi A8 is a model that has developed and improved without ever making much in the way of song or dance. As such, it’s probably an undervalued used car. Although the second generation version looks to offer the biggest bang for your buck right now, this third generation design can offer a properly modern limousine experience for about the price of a mid-range Honda Civic.
Naturally the diesels make the most sense, with the 3.0-litre cars being the most popular, though the 4.2-litre diesel is well worth searching for. At the top of the line-up, as good as the frantically fast S8 is, it’s hard not to feel a pang of nostalgia for the madness of the old V10 car. Overall, when it comes to these high-end saloons, the maxim is to try before you buy. After all, you might find the A8’s cool, high-tech approach a little aloof and prefer the bigger personality of a Jaguar XJ. It’s a very individual decision. The A8 is a special car but it will only appeal to those who like to keep a comparatively low profile. Many love it for exactly that degree of measured discretion.
