The new and redesigned Volvo XC40 T4

The T4 engine variant is offered in every XC40 trim: Momentum, R-Design and Inscription, as well as their respective 'Pro’ model lines. Prices start from £32,770 in Momentum spec, climbing to £38,820 in Inscription Pro guise.

All models come with an impressive standard specification, including LED headlights, cruise control, heated door mirrors, a 12.3-inch digital driver’s display, and a nine-inch touchscreen sat-nav.

The new T4 features the same 2.0-litre four-cylinder unit found throughout the Volvo line-up. Here it produces 187bhp and 300Nm, matching it closely to the BMW X1 sDrive20i. The XC40 T4 is only available in four-wheel drive, whereas the X1 is available in both front and four-wheel drive.

In terms of performance, the T4 will accelerate from 0-62 in 8.5 seconds, making it competitive enough against BMW’s X1. The eight-speed automatic gearbox is reported to be slicker than its competitors as well, with Auto Express stating, “Shifts are slick and, in contrast to Audi’s jerky dual-clutch box, remains obedient during low-speed manoeuvring”. Volvo quotes a respectable 40.4mpg for the 2.0 petrol engine; however this does fall short of the X1 and Q3.

The cabin is said to be a wonderful place to sit. The unique portrait oriented touchscreen and variety of colour options make for a more lively experience than that of its predecessors, although it is still heavily inspired by the larger XC60 and XC90.
