Volvo Cars has released its third-generation S60 model to the range, with a high-specification R-Design Edition to start UK sales. This latest addition to the range continues the S60’s role as a premium mid-size saloon, but with enhanced styling as well as many new technologies and safety features.
It makes its debut in UK showrooms from 11 May in the R-Design Edition, which brings with it a high-specification and a powerful engine. Volvo’s new state-of-the-art plant in the States will produce the new S60, and will carry on the high standards customers have grown to expect from the Scandinavian car manufacturer.
The R-Design Edition brings with it a sporty interpretation of the model, offering striking 19-inch alloy wheels and lowered sports suspension to create a performance focused stance. Heated sports seats come as standard on this model and are upholstered in a combination of Nappa leather and high-quality fabric, while a black headlining and metal mesh interior trim add to the sporty ambience.
A variety of interior features come standard, including a driver’s head-up display, rear-view camera, front and rear parking sensors, a heated steering wheel and a 600W 14-speaker Harman Kardon surround sound system.
The launch edition of the S60 is available with a single, front-wheel-drive powertrain and Volvo’s proven 250hp T5 turbocharged petrol engine. This engine is matched with a smooth eight-speed automatic transmission that allows for quick manual gear selection through its steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters. As a member of Volvo’s Drive-E family, this engine provides a strong combination of responsive performance and efficiency. Combined cycle fuel economy ranges from 35.3 to 39.8mpg, and 0-62 can be dispatched in just 6.5 seconds.
Jon Wakefield, Volvo Car UK Managing Director, said: "The success of our mid-size vehicles, the multi-award-winning new V60 estate and XC60 SUV, has created an ideal platform on which to introduce the new S60. Focusing on our brand strengths of design, technology and safety, we are confident the S60 has the potential to perform strongly in what is traditionally a very competitive market segment."
Hybrid variants of the new S60 are to follow soon after the R-Design’s launch, which will provide an all-wheel-drive alternative to make the S60 even more versatile and appealing to a wider audience.
The generously equipped S60 R-Design Edition is on sale now, priced at £37,920 on the road. First deliveries to customers are expected from May this year.
