The all-electric ID.3 and sporty T-Roc R thrilled the crowd at the Goodwood Festival of Speed last weekend (4 to 7 July). The Volkswagen stand hosted a range of new and upcoming models, giving visitors an exciting glimpse into the brand’s electromobility future. And to top it off, the powerful ID.R all-electric racing car showed its amazing potential by smashing the hillclimb record.

Alongside the ID.3 prototype with its distinctive pink and blue camouflage display, were other members of the all-electric ID. family, including the ID. BUZZ and ID. VIZZION concepts. The ID.3 will be the first model in the ID. family to hit the UK market in 2020.

The Golf R and new T-Roc R performance SUV revealed the enduring strength of the R brand, the latter providing an exciting dose of dynamism, months ahead of the hot SUV’s introduction to UK customers in late 2019. Volkswagen’s latest performance champion, the motorsport-inspired Golf GTI TCR, was also on display.

The ID.R electric racer combined speed and electromobility to conquer the outright hillclimb record on the weekend. Volkswagen racing driver Romain Dumas completed the 1.86-kilometre track in just 39.90 seconds. In doing so, the 680PS electric race car broke the previous record, which had stood for 20 years, by 1.7 seconds. He also took victory in the Sunday Shootout.

The previous record at the famous hillclimb was set in 1999 by Nick Heidfeld in a 780PS McLaren-Mercedes MP4/13 with a combustion engine.
