The T6.1 now also comes with a raft of new safety and convenience features, including automatic Crosswind Assist (as standard), lane-keeping assist and automatic parking. These new additions to the van's features list have been made possible through the introduction of new electromechanical power steering - in place of the older hydraulically-assisted system.
Engine options
The 2.0-litre TDI turbocharged diesel engine line-up in the T6.1 has been simplified, and improved, to provide a more comprehensive package for customers, while also meeting the forthcoming Euro 6d Temp emissions regulations well ahead of time.
Power output now ranges from 90hp to 199hp – which is more at the lower end, but less at the top. Customers can opt between these two power outputs with the choice of a 110hp and 150hp engine as well. The 150hp engine is available with the options of a DSG automatic transmission and 4Motion four-wheel drive; the 199hp motor gets DSG as part of the package, with 4Motion also optional. The other two options use a manual gearbox, and as with the previous Transporter, front-wheel drive is standard.
There is also going to be an electric version of the T6.1. Set to be called the e-Transporter (to join the already announced e-Caddy and e-Crafter), it will come in two variants, one prioritising payload, the other prioritising driving range. Expected to go on sale in the UK in early 2020, it will offer zero-emissions motoring and be a cost-effective option for business and personal users.
