The Transparent Factory in Dresden has started production of the fully electric Volkswagen ID.3. This is the fourth production site in the world, which is producing Volkswagen models based on the Modular Electric Drive Toolkit (MEB) and the second site producing the ID.3. This step further pushes Volkswagens central goal of becoming a beacon in Germany, offering customers, visitors and guests an experience of the ID family which will include advise, test drives and production visits etc.

As the Dresden site is being converted for the new ID family and MEB, Volkswagen are also increasing the volume of production at two Chinese MEB plants every week and at their Zwickau electric car plant. This further confirms the businesses goal of becoming global leaders within electric mobility.

Danny Auerswald, Site Manager of the Transparent Factory, says: “with the start of the production of the ID.3, we are giving the green light for our strategic realignment.” Volkswagen are without a doubt continuing to expand within electric mobility and according to Thomas Aehlig, Chairman of the Works Council of the Transparent Factory, are now capable of producing additional MED models at the site. The four MEB sites they have now up and running, together, have a maximum production capacity of more than 900,000 vehicles a year. There next sites are also preparing for MEB production in Emden, Hanover and Chattanooga (US).

The ID.3 production will start with one shift and 35 vehicles, from Monday to Friday. Continuing with their regular visiting times for tours: Monday to Saturday from 9:30 am to 6:30 pm, Sunday from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm.

Over time, customers will be handed over much more vehicles in the Transparent Factory, therefore recently a second delivery point has been set up at the site. The increase in customer handovers is expected to rise to 5,000 vehicles in 2021 from the previous year of 3,296 vehicles in 2020. By 2022, the goal at the site is to delivery just under 10,000 vehicles. Furthermore, The Functional Testing station at Dresden is being further expanded, with focal points on the testing of assistance systems, mobile online services, engines and chassis.

The Transparent Factory production area was converted to meet the requirements needed of the MEB, during the start of 2021, with the first ID.3 conversions being made earlier in 2020. The “marriage” was adapted here, where the body and chassis are bolted together.
