Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles is consistently and rapidly progressing the development and implementation of autonomous driving. The latest advancement: Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles’ first all-electric autonomous van.
The four-wheel-drive ID. BUZZ is the world’s first versatile electric van with a fully autonomous driving mode. The van can be charged either inductively or via a charging station and has a range of around 350 miles. At almost five metres long, van space is utilised due to batteries in the floor allowing the front and rear axle to be spaced widely apart, providing more space for passengers inside.
Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles are preparing for the introduction of autonomous systems for traffic use in 2025. The company has invested in Argo AI, a company specialized in software platforms for Autonomous Driving. The goal is to support the consistent and fast development and use of autonomous systems. Together, they are responsible for the development of fully autonomous systems and their commercial use in urban areas, and plan to develop and build Special Purpose Vehicles (SPV), such as robo-taxis and vans, in the future.
Additionally, the Group is also investing billions in projects that develop assisted and automated driving functions for the private mobility sector. These vehicles are utilising technology featured in the ID. BUZZ. Constant developments ensure the futuristic, transformative van will be available sometime next year.
