First introduced in July 2020, the MINI App connects drivers to their vehicles and is continuing its development for 2021. The expansion of the MINI App’s content and its fast paced rollout is innovating and scalable. The app is designed fully in-house by BMW using an open-source UI development resource from Google. The development team is one of the world’s largest after Google’s and comprises of a total of 300 employees.
The Vice President Offboard Platform BMW Group, Dr. Nicolai Krämer has said “The new app platform is built on three pillars: user friendliness, safety and reliability,” and “has a consistently designed set of functions spanning all brands on the basis of feedback and our customers’ usage behaviour.”
The MINI App is available free of charge on both iOS and Android operating systems, which provides customers with useful information such as vehicle location and the locking/unlocking of doors. Through the application users can also access electric vehicle information, such as the available driving range, the charging status and directly upload destination addresses to the navigation system. The vehicle can be pre-conditioned for comfort levels, either heating or cooling the interior through the smartphone app.
Amazon Alexa is provided through the MINI App for vehicle models from 2019 onwards. Once set up through an Amazon account, users can have voice control over playing music, phone calls and compatible smart home devices. An interesting feature available through the MINI App is the ability to contact the users MINI Service Partner directly, allowing them to access an overview of their servicing requirements.
