From Mr. Bean’s MINI to Luther’s Volvo 740… here are some of the coolest, most memorable TV Cars (according to us). Can you think of any others?
An absolute classic British TV show, Mr. Bean, played by Rowan Atkinson. Throughout the series, Mr. Bean had an array of Mini Cars, including an orange 1969 BMC Morris Mini 1000 Mark 2 which was only shown in the first episode. Mr. Bean then had a citron-green 1977 Leyland Mini 1000. Mr. Bean was renowned for adventures and near misses in his black-bonneted citron-green car. The car has a 1.0 litre engine with an output of 36.2HP. The car has also been shown in video games including ‘Resident Evil 2’ and ‘Grand Theft Auto V’.
The Saint, a British mystery spy thriller TV series was aired on ITV between 1962 and 1969. The Volvo P18000 was driven by Roger Moore in the TV series. The Volvo is a 2+2, front-engine, rear-drive and was marketed as a touring car. The interior of the car still has a thermometer on the dashboard and a fan to cool down the actors when filming. Back in the sixties, everyone wanted a Volvo P1800, it was a legendary model.
Ashes to Ashes, a British science-fiction/police drama TV series first aired in 2008. The famous red Audi Quattro is known as the unmarked police car in Ashes to Ashes, featuring in sixteen episodes. The car has a turbo 2.1-litre five-cylinder engine and was known to have a lot of handbrake turns. The car had been kept in storage from the final episode of Ashes to Ashes in 2010. In 2014, the car was auctioned off with battle scars from the series.
Are you a big Friends fan? You might remember the Porsche in the fifth episode of the sixth season in Central Park – aired October 21, 1999. Joey stumbled upon a set of keys for the Porsche and could not find the owner. Instead of handing the keys into lost and found, Joey goes searching for the car. Joey absolutely loves the attention he receives when standing next to the Porsche. The Porsche in the episode was a 3.4-litre water-cooled flat-size 996 convertible with a top speed of 173mph.
We are BIG Luther fans here at Listers, and of course, season five is ALL about cars. Luther, played by Idris Elba, traded in his Volvo 740 DL to an earlier model, the 240. In the series, DCI John Luther has plenty of cases to crack and an old school, slightly battered Volvo is seen as the best solution in the centre of London. He is able to leave his car unlocked with the engine running in a variety of council estates, knowing the car will still be there when he returns. In terms of urban case chase scenarios, the Volvo can essentially go sideways. Head to BBC iPlayer to watch all five series, it's a must-watch.
