Weeks before the Golf received its two legendary awards, the Golf was named the Best Car of the Half Century at the British Motor Show. To celebrate its 50th anniversary, media guests from around the globe, took to the air above Cappadocia, Turkey, in a specially designed hot-air ballon. This was watched by thousands.
Director of Volkswagen UK, Rod McLeod, said: “Over five decades the Golf family has, with good reason, established itself as a cornerstone not just of the Volkswagen line-up in the UK but, also, of the British motoring scene. Today’s revised models demonstrate why these cars have woven themselves into the fabric of British life thanks to their classless appeal, exceptional quality and peerless practicality. With new infotainment technology and more style than ever, the latest Golf is now cementing that success still further.”
Within its 50 years of production the Volkswagen Golf has become shorthand for the Golf’s entire class of car. It's expanded appeal is seen through the Cabriolet, R, GTI and the GTI Clubsport.
