Get ready for the road this Summer

Book a Service

After so many months of cars sitting idle in driveways and not driving much further than the local supermarket, many of us are very excited to finally be able to get back on the roads. Whether this is travelling to see a friend, road-tripping or going on a summer staycation, it is essential to make sure your vehicle is safe and ready for your journey.

We have compiled a list of things to check before you make any longer journeys this Summer season, so you can rest easy knowing your vehicle is prepared to safely take you wherever your Summer plans may lead.

Tyres

Sometimes the condition of car tyres can significantly deteriorate if a vehicle is left unused for too long. To check your tyres are safe to drive over long distances, the best option is to take your vehicle to a professional. However, checks for air pressure, tyre condition and tread depth can also be conducted at home. Some important things to look out for are ‘flat spots’ and sidewall cracking.

Battery

Rising heat levels may work your car battery harder than normal. Make sure to have your battery checked before taking any longer journeys over the summer months, to prevent any breakdowns and for added peace of mind.

Air Conditioning

Hopefully, summer will bring us lots of sun and warm weather. To make sure all drivers, children and pets keep cool in the car, it’s important to check that your air conditioning system is working correctly. Be sure to check that your cooling system contains the right amount of coolant and water, and any air vents are clear from grime, dirt and debris, so cool air can flow freely through the vehicle.

Windscreen wipers

We also hope to see very little rain over the upcoming Summer months, but knowing English weather, it’s not guaranteed. It’s a good idea to check your windscreen wipers to make sure they aren't splitting and to check the washer fluid levels. If they are low, simply pop the lid and top up with washer fluid.

Oil levels

Check your vehicle’s oil levels regularly to ensure that it remains well lubricated in the heat. It is often advisable to keep spare oil in your car in case you find yourself in need of an emergency refill.

Accessories

Some useful accessories to consider taking with you on the road, especially on holidays and trips, are:

  • A Sat Nav with updated programs, so you can always find your way
  • A warning triangle, in case of an emergency
  • A first-aid kit
  • A torch (and maybe some spare batteries)
  • Sunglasses, essential for drivers to block any distracting or disruptive glares
