There are 17 million road traffic accidents that take place each year and it can be quite stressful if you are involved in one. Familiarise yourself with the following helpful pointers which could save you time and further inconvenience in the event of an accident.
Although it may seem like the obvious thing to do, people can often feel overwhelmed by stress and panic. Always stop at the scene if your accident has caused injuries to people or domestic animals, including any damage to other vehicles or roadside fixtures.
Call 999 immediately and ask for an ambulance if anyone is in need of medical attention, or ask for the police if the road is blocked or damaged, or if someone leaves the scene without exchanging details.
All drivers involved in the accident must exchange details, such as names, addresses, telephone numbers, vehicle registrations, insurance companies and policy numbers. Ensure the details exchanged are accurate. This could be done by offering a form of identification. It can be a good idea to make a note of the scene, such as location, vehicles involved, collision details and even take photographs if safe to do so.
Try to get the names, addresses and vehicle registration numbers of any witnesses.
